The organisms require special laboratory circumstances to be cultured therefore they aren’t routinely isolated from individual samples. These bacteria were identified in 1985 as causing CSD; the recently identified bacteria were categorized first as Rochalimaea henselae but had been later classified as Bartonella henselae due to genetic variations from Rochalimaea. The organisms are located in cat fleas also. The CDC estimates that about 40 percent of all cats carry Bartonella henselae at some point within their life.
